Winter Preparation 101: Your Snowplow Checklist

SnowPlowChecklist-sm.jpgWinter weather will be here sooner than you think! This calls for reliable snow plows and equipment. Follow these three steps to prepare for snow removal season:

First: Run Through Your Pre-Season Checklist

Have you made your list and checked it twice? Making sure your snow plow is ready for harsh conditions can help to prevent future damage and repairs. Here are a few tasks you'll want to complete before you begin clearing snow:

  • Examine and tighten bolts and fasteners
  • Check the welds in your plow structure
  • Asses whether the cutting edge and plow shoes need to be replaced or not
  • Grease the hitch of your plow and the wing pins
  • Inspect the machine you will use to operate the plow
  • Test the battery, charging system, and light operation of your machine and plow
  • Clean all electrical connections
  • Adjust the chain tension if necessary
  • Touch up worn paint in order to avoid potential wear and rust
  • If you're planning to upgrade to a new plow this year, make sure to choose one that's right for you

Second: Stock Up on Spare Parts

Harsh winter weather is hard on snow removal equipment, and hidden hazards underneath the snow can trip you up when you least expect it. Be sure you have the spare parts you'll need when winter wears out your equipment. Some items to keep on hand are extra trip return springs and connecting pins, hoses for the turning cylinders, dielectric grease, and solenoids. You'll also want to have basic tools like a hammer, screwdriver, and socket set.

Third: Be Prepared

Emergencies are common in the winter months. Avoid getting left out in the snow by being prepared for the worst. Keep items like tire chains, shovels, a flashlight with batteries, jumper cables, and tow rope with you for emergency use. This will save you time and money if you ever need to use them.
